The reds opened their 2011/12 season with a home fixture against Chapeltown, a team never played before. The weather was typical fo Hough top in blustery conditions but the reds started really well and worked the opening goal of the campaign within the first minute, for new signing Reece to fire home. The reds added a second five minutes later with Andrew adding a second with a fine strike. The reds were cruising and well worth their lead. The were also creating plenty of chances but agian were being wastful infront on goal.
After quarter of af an hour, the visitors broke away and dubiously pulled one back. This sparked the reds and they managed to put away one of their chances through a fluffed shot from Kayle. 3-1 at half time and the reds well deserved their lead.
The chances were rung at half time and i dont think the reds actually took the field. The lads were doing the simple things wrong, several players were giving the ball away easily when under little players and the visitors were using the wind well to carry the balls through for the 3 players they left up the field. The visitors got one back through awful defending, the defender ran along side the player and never actually made a challenge on the ball easy goal. A few minutes later the reds had no shape at all and the visitors striker took his chance for the equaliser. What had happened? the football had gone the shape things were not going well. Things got worse shortly after with the visitors taking a lead, normally i would say a surprise lead but i cant here we were poor.
More changes were made to try and get us back into the game and still we were creating chances but still being very wasteful in good positions. We thought we had a penalty when Luke twinkled into the area and was hacked down, the referee blew but apparantly it wasnt a penalty or a free kick and play resumed with the keeper. Two more good one on ones with the keeper were wasted. Then finally a bit of quality Owen took a quick free kick for Kayle to fire home the equaliser and two minutes later the ball was worked to Kayle in the area who composed himself and smashed in what proved to be the winner.
When the final whistle blew the lads knew they had been lucky and were releived they had the win. Poor passing, poor shape and again letting a lead slip, some managers would be happy with the 3 points but we can play so much better and need to start killing teams off. I expect much more from the lads than what i got today and know we will play better. You have to admire the lads commitment never to give up and to work until the final minute. However, they should not have been in that position. No MOTM today as the players didnt work hard enough overall. Lets hope for better net week against Guiseley
