The reds crashed out of the Junior shield at the first attempt, the visiting coach had joked beforehand about going easy on them but Ossett were a strong side.
The opening exchanges were both sides trying to stamp their authority on the game, the play at times was quite physical, but fair, and with some of the Ossett team towering over us it was always going to be hard. The Ossett goal came from what seemed like an inocuous shot which the keeper looked to have covered, but for a terrible bounce which took it beyond the arms of the keeper and into the net. The reds responded and created several chances with Kayle firing over twice and other good attempts also missed. The reds keeper had little to do and play very well acting as a sweepeer for the team.
The second half started and the reds should have drawn level within minutes. good work down the left saw the ball land at Reece who had 3 attempts to fire home but the keeper/defenders managed to ride out the danger. Soon after the visitors won a free kick out wide. The reds defenders were too deep and from the indirect free kick we managed to gift another goal. In the true spirit of a cup tie, and of Stanningley the lads responded well and we camped in the Ossett half for the rest of the came. We got one goal through kayle, who could have got more, Luke, Steve, Ben, Reece, Jake all went close with quality efforts but the Reds couldnt force an equaliser to take the game into extra time. Had the score ended 6-2 it wouldnt have been undeserved. However, Ossett defended bravely and managed to get the win and we wish them all the best in future rounds.
For the reds, we played good football, created umpteen chances, moved the ball well, never gave up and fought to the finish our only downfall was that we did not take our chances which in football can cost you like it did today. When we take our chances there will be a big score coming. Well dones lads you did yourselves proud today.
